CITI Lab Safety Training Practice Test

The appropriate method for disposing of sharps, such as needles and blades, is to place them in designated sharps containers. This is crucial for ensuring both safety and compliance with health regulations. Sharps containers are specifically designed to be puncture-resistant and leak-proof, minimizing the risk of injury from the sharp objects and preventing contamination from potentially infectious materials.

Using designated containers helps protect healthcare workers, laboratory staff, and waste management personnel from accidental needle sticks and injuries. Proper disposal in these containers also addresses environmental concerns and public health safety by ensuring that hazardous waste is handled appropriately and disposed of in a way that prevents exposure to the general public.

Disposing of sharps in regular trash bins, biohazard bags, or leaving them on the lab bench poses significant risks and does not adhere to safety protocols, which can lead to injuries and potential legal issues regarding waste disposal regulations.
