What is a safety data sheet (SDS)?

A safety data sheet (SDS) is a critical document that provides detailed information regarding the hazards associated with a specific chemical as well as instructions for safe handling, storage, and emergency measures in case of an incident. SDSs are designed to inform users about the properties of the chemicals they may be working with, including health risks, environmental risks, and appropriate protective measures.

The SDS typically includes sections that describe physical and chemical properties, health hazards, protective measures, and emergency response actions. This comprehensive data ensures that anyone who may come into contact with the chemical is aware of its hazards and can take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and the environment.

Other options, while they reflect aspects of lab safety and chemical management, do not accurately describe what an SDS is. A list of chemicals used in a laboratory or a record of lab training sessions might be useful for inventory or training purposes, respectively, but they do not encapsulate the detailed hazard communication provided by an SDS. Similarly, a safety procedure manual outlines operating procedures and protocols but is distinct from the detailed hazard information provided in a safety data sheet.
